Consider for a moment the enormous and escalating divide between the excessively rich and the economically poor in America.
Start with thirty-five so-called representatives of the people who, having accumulated astronomical sums of wealth, carve up the public budget in such a manner that, in the words of the prophet Amos, they “trample the head of the poor into the dust of the earth, and push the afflicted out of the way” (Amos 2:7, NRSV).
No prophet’s words, however, will impede their greed. For greed is their god and the enemy of the common good.
