Historian Timothy Snyder, a longtime student of authoritarianism and tyranny in various cultures, offers a stark and accurate appraisal of where we in the United States are as a nation now under authoritarian rule. Oligarchs are at this very moment financing and fostering a hands-on coup d'état. This is a constitutional crisis of epic proportion.
The final paragraph in Dr. Snyder’s essay (“The Logic of Destruction”) is a rallying cry to save our country from its present course. Parenthetically, it should be noted that Trump and his cronies are now directly attacking specific Christian denominations, which is straight out of Hitler’s playbook. We will cover those stories in future posts.
I urge you to read the two Snyder essays below and share them immediately with at least ten people, asking them to share them as well. Every one of us must be engaged in thoughtful, deliberate, and active responses to this crisis. There is no time to waste. Let’s get busy (if we’re not already) and support one another in the process.
